Shannon was recently interviewed by radio show host Dr. Michael Pipich, a licensed therapist who delves into the lives of people and families, creating new insights into their problems for clearer solutions.

The statistics are undeniable: Half of all American children will witness the break up their parent’s marriage. And the sad truth is that children of divorce have significantly more adjustment and achievement problems than children from non-divorced families. All the research points to the same conclusion: how parents deal with the divorce/separation directly impacts adjustment of children. On the next Breakthrough with Michael Pipich, author and therapist Shannon R. Rios, LMFT, with discuss her book The 7 Fatal Mistakes Divorced and Separated Parents Make: Raising Healthy Children of Divorce. Michael and Shannon will not only examine the common problems children of divorce often face, but what every parent should know about how to co-parent effectively and focus on the needs of their children, even as they themselves struggle with the emotional pain of separation. If divorce or separation has touched your life, or you’re a professional who works with divorced families, you won’t want to miss this episode of Breakthrough with Michael Pipich,Thursday March 14 at 9:00am Pacific Time.

Tune in on March 14th at 10am MST to listen!  Share with friends and family, she gives great insights and tips on how we can successfully assist our children through the divorce process!

We want to wish you a joyful and abundant Holiday Season. We planted this tree in the front yard this summer. This year,we made it our Christmas Tree. I bought the peace and joy ornaments as this is my wish for all. My goal is to wish peace and joy to each person that passes by on our sidewalk. How can you wish joy to each person you meet or are in contact with this holiday season?

Hustle and Bustle

My hope for you and your family this holiday season is to slow down, take things off your schedule and just be with those family and friends that you love. Take time to reflect on all you DID accomplish this year. I hope you will do that now; take a few minutes to reflect on what you accomplished and what you are grateful for. In reflecting on the events this past week in our country, it is so crucial to put down technology (and especially any violent TV, Videos and Movies) and be present with those beautiful people around us. That is what I am doing this holiday season; we are closing the office for two weeks! It has been a busy year and it is time to bring in 2013 in a completely peaceful and calm place, fully ready for all 2013 has to bring. I sense it is going to be phenomenal! We are ready!

Family and the Holidays

Does it ever amaze you how frustrated and triggered you can feel when you are with family over the holidays? Our old patterns can get easily triggered when we are with all of our family for the holidays. I have been working with clients around this. Strategies we have created are:

  • Practice Self-Care – Take care of you and let others know you may need to take care of you. Or just go take a walk when your stress level hits that 3-4 on a 1-10 scale.
  • Breathe – Take deep breaths when things start to feel stressful. Get some fresh air.
  • Exercise – Go exercise, do something healthy for you! Don’t leave this out.
  • Set Limits/Boundaries – Do not take on too much, say NO when you are feeling overwhelmed. Overstimulation can stress us, we have to set boundaries and take time for us even during the holidays.

In Gratitude….To You

I am grateful for all I have in my life and all those wonderful people that are in my life. I am grateful for my team I work with, Sarah, Krista, Simon, Rosabelle and Sandi.  I am grateful for all the clients we have served this past year and for the all children we impact.  I am also honored to coach leaders in large organizations, I have a true passion for this work as well.  I was not sure exactly what would happen (but this truly was my vision) when I left my corporate job 9 years ago. I am thankful this is the outcome.  I want to take this time to thank all of you for the impact you have been on my life in this past year.  As my yoga teacher said “what if you wake up tomorrow and the only things you have left are what you were grateful for today?”

Slowing Down to Speed Up

This is going to be my motto for the coming year.  I have heard it from clients in this past year.  The faster technology goes, I believe the more ineffective we become in so many ways.  I saw a YouTube video of a mom on her phone texting and her child was tugging at her leg.  The caption was “no matter who is on the other end of that phone, no matter how insignificant, all this child knows is that they are more important than her”.  I see so many families so addicted to the technology we have and I have to set my own boundaries.  My wish for your family this year is connection…..to each other.  Not to technology.  It has been proven that children from families that have dinner together do better overall throughout life.  Please take a moment to slow down this year and put the technology down so you can connect with your loved ones.  Have dinner, sing in the car, play on the floor, or walk outside.  Connect, your loved ones will thank you, one way or another.

Our Health

This past year I learned that without our health, life is very challenging.  I was diagnosed with a  wheat allergy and my immune system and intestines were not working well.  I  was quite sick and during this time, I reflected a lot on health.  I encourage you to take a step forward for your health this coming year.  I have worked to really lower my level of wheat intake and it makes a difference for me on many levels.  I also have a commitment to attending yoga and/or walking 5 days a week.  I recently watched a video that presented amazing statistics on the benefits of walking just 10 minutes a day.  What will you do for your health this year?  We take this so for granted until it is gone…..my wish is a healthy life for you.

Love

It is so simple
Yet sometimes so very hard
Breathe, Enjoy, Live, Connect
Allow yourself the gift of love
Love you, then
Loving others is easier
Smile
Know you are safe
Love, send it out
Love, receive it in
Love is everywhere
Mostly it is in your heart
Open and feel
Stop and breathe
Close your eyes,
Feel the love around you…
I am sending it to you.

Being present for our children is one of the best gifts we can give them.  Children know when we are not focusing on them.  It is also important to be present with ourselves.  Conscious breathing, or longer exhale than inhale can help our body calm down.  It has been said we can change our lives in we just breathe concsiously a few times a day.   The most acclaimed parenting programs focus on parents taking care of themselves so they keep calm which, in turn, keeps children calmer. It is a true phenomenon called “mirror neurons”.  We mirror each other and so if we want those around us to be calmer and more peaceful, we must cultivate that peace within.  What can you do today to cultivate your peace inside?  On that note, it is time for me to get out and take a nice walk in this wonderful weather in Northern MI.  I am once again visiting my wonderful nephew and sister and brother-in-law in MI.  Enjoy this day and be in gratitude for all you have, that is going to be the focus of my walk.

Sometimes I believe parents and caregivers of children don’t take enough time to take care of themselves and put themselves first sometimes.  We sometimes hold ourselves to high standards and beat ourselves up for normal things or things that we did not have a lot of control over.

I worked with a client today on commitment and compassion.  These are really important  things to remember this time of year.  Take time to be compassionate with yourself, you are only human.  Take time to have commitment to you.  Take time to do what YOU want.  Caregivers must take care of themselves or they become depleted.

What do you need today to take care of you?  What one thing can you commit to this holiday season to do to take care of you?  What gift will you give yourself this year?  Hopefully your gift will include the gift of love to yourself.  You deserve it.

Of course, I think kids are amazing.  That is why I do the work I do.  This week I was blessed to spend 6 days with my 4.5 month old nephew in Northern MI.  I just want to take this moment to thank and honor all of our children for the teachers they are in our lives.  Liam teaches me about patience and unconditional love.  I took care of his mother so many years ago as I was a teeenager during her growing years (my sister).  I know it is also due to my sisters that I do my work in this world, but it is such a gift to me to enjoy my nephew/godson.  I just want to take this time and have you take the next few minutes to sit/breathe/meditate on the gifts that all the children in your life have given you.  I will always contend that they are our greatest teachers.  I want to thank and honor all the children in the world.  We must also remember that at one time, we all were those little children teaching the adults in our lives.
